The Rotary Club of Goose Creek held its third annual "Running the Creek" Saturday October 20th, 2007. The 5K run/walk at Middleton Park in Goose Creek was a sponsored event to raise money for Alzheimer's disease research and local scholarships. "In previous years, funds went for an array of charitable organizations," Rotarian Nancy Hellstrom said. "This year, the club voted for Alzheimer's research." Rotary Clubs in Georgia and the Carolinas, and the American Federation of Aging Research established a new program called The CART Fund. Its goal is to encourage the developments of Alzheimer's research projects by providing support and funding. Alzheimer's disease destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life, according to the Alzheimer's Association. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Today, it is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 24 million people worldwide have dementia of which the majority is due to Alzheimer's. (story provided by Joe Anderson –The Gazette) Local businesses helped sponsor the run and donated prizes awarded after the race. |
